The First Rose

by - Thursday, May 22, 2014

Hello there!

I believe we're almost at another bank holiday weekend... how very delightful! The last few months have been a flurry of long weekends and it's easing us into summer perfectly.

When we returned at the beginning of this week from our break in Norfolk, I discovered that my very special rose was flowering. It's my first ever rose, my birthday rose, my favourite rose. We had a heavy rainfall last night though and it was looking a little bit down, so I brought some cuttings inside to save me looking out the kitchen window only to realise I'd lost it's flowers to the storm.

These are the floppy velvet petals in which I thrust my nose every time I walk past, breathing their syrupy scent in as deep as possible so as not to waste such natural perfection.

Isn't that just the most refreshing site ever?

Still dappled in raindrops and fresh from the night's storm.

Roses are one of the things in life that just smell better when they've been caught in the rain. Their scent somehow becomes fresher, cleaner and just utterly beautiful, in the most amazing, uplifting, fragrant way possible.

I actually wrote about exactly the same thing (but a different rose) in August last year. And, I wrote it just after I'd run around the garden in the absolute pouring rain to cut some flowers to bring inside. I think early morning roses that have just been showered are one of my favourite things. You can read last year's post, 'After the Rain,' here.

I hope this rose climber will give me many more flowers this summer, as it truly is wonderful for the soul to be able to bring homegrown flowers inside. My yellow bush rose is trying desperately to catch up with this one so hopefully we'll have displays of both pastel yellows and sugary pinks in our home shortly!

Have a fab day my lovely friends, and a beautiful weekend, whatever you do.
